SeapixOnlineDisplaying 1 of 1 TRITON REEFER (1990/8818grt/9683dwt/IMO 8911102) - Some onlookers thought a shipload of bananas was undergoing an impromtu delivery to Bean Rock lighthouse at the entrance to Auckland harbour early today. They were wrong.
The truth of the matter however was that the inbound refrigerated cargo ship Triton Reefer had lost power in the Rangitoto Channel inbound to the port of Auckland fro Davao in the Philippines.
The 1990-built, 9683dwt ship had minutes earlier taken on her pilot but things went wrong when the 144m ship lost all power.
"The pilot followed a textbook procedure for such incidents and took the ship to a safe position and dropped both anchors and called in the Ports of Auckland tugs" said Dee Radhakrishnan, the port's Senior Communications Advisor.
The tugs having made fast to the ship, engineers aboard located the problem and when fixed, the engines were restarted.
Triton Reefer made for port under her own power where her cargo was discharged at Jellicoe Wharf before she departed again later that evening for Wellington.
