Three crew members, two Indians and one Brazilian have been killed, and four tourists, Three British and one Italian, have been taken to hospital after the luxury cruise ship COSTA EUROPA crashed into a wharf while berthing during bad weather.
The 1986-built, 54763 grt vessel was berthing at the Egyptian resort town of Sharm-el-Sheikh and has reportedly been holed on her starboard side.
The ship is now safely alongside and all passengers have been accommodated in local hotels. Costa are arranging flights to take tourists back home.
COSTA EUROPA has been part of the Costa fleet since 2002 having previously sailed with Holland America Line as WESTERDAM and before that as HOMERIC in the Home Line fleet.
At the time of the accident, she had been on a regular 18-day itinerary sailing from Dubai to Savona, Italy with 1437 passengers aboard.
It has been a week of highs and lows for the Italian company which operates 14 vessels. Earlier this week the company celebrated the launch of its latest vessel the 92000-grt COSTA DELIZIOSA at the Fincantieri shipyards in Trieste.
