The following information was gratefully received from Tony Atkinson:
ALBANY was a Russian standard Kherson type cargo ship and arrived into lay-up on 29th July 1983. She was originally German owned from deliver in 1968 until 1980 when she was renamed ALBANY. She left lay-up on 22nd September 1984 for ship breakers and arrived Kaohsiung, Taiwan for demolition on 23rd December 1984.
BRUSSELS arrived in the River Fal as TEXACO BRUSSELS on 26 August 1983 and was sold within a couple of months went down to dry-dock for new owners and returned to River Fal as BRUSSELS. Whilst laid up she was sold for a second time and renamed ABU AHMEDA and sailed for Piraeus, Greece 25th August 1985 towed by tug Kappa Power. Over the next ten years she was used as storage in Piraeus, for dirty bilge water from other ships. She arrived Alang, India on 27th September 1996 to be broken up.
GOLDEN DOLPHIN she arrived in the River Fal as MATRA on 14 July 1982 and during her lay-up was sold and renamed GOLDEN DOLPHIN. She sailed on 17th October 1984 for Chinese Ship breakers. Arrived Shanghai during March 1985. She was originally PORT CAROLINE of Port Line, part of Cunard who owned QE2. In 1979 as PORT CAROLINE she laid up in the Fal and the following two years laid up alongside Falmouth Docks.
AL-SALAMA arrived into lay-up on 24th May 1984 and sailed renamed LANGELLE 14 December 1884. In 1993 she laid up again as EASTCAPE and again 1996 when she was sold again and sailed as PACIFIC GALA. She finally went to ship breakers at Chittagong, Bangladesh in October 2006.
Both AL SALAMA and GOLDEN DOLPHIN were refrigerated cargo ships, these ships carry seasonal cargoes of fruit and lay idle for four to six months each year.
