SeapixOnlineDisplaying 1 of 1 KATHLEEN AND MAY - the last remaining British-built wooden hull three masted top sail schooner moored on the River Torridge at Appledore, North Devon, England. Built by Fergusson and Baird at Connah's Quay in NE Wales, she was launched as the LIZZIE MAY (the names of the Captain's daughters) in 1900 for local Chester shipping company Coppack Brothers coming under the command of Capt. John Coppack.
After a career carrying general cargoes around the UK and as far as France and the Channel Islands followed by years as a coal lugger on the Irish Sea, she was laid up when that trade went into decline. In 1961 she was laid up in Plymouth until in 1968, in a decaying state of repair, she was discovered by the H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh who set up the Maritime Trust which eventually bought Kathleen and May in 1970 and restored her at Gloucester Docks. She is now privately owned and is part of Britain's National Historic Fleet Core Collection.
