SeapixOnlineDisplaying 1 of 1 MSC BELLATRIX (2002/50242gt/IMO 9232096, ex-NORASIA BELLATRIX, HANJIN PENNSYLVANIA) inbound to Melbourne off Portsea. She was launched as HANJIN PENNSYLVANIA in 2002 built by Hanjin Heavy Industries�South Korea and delivered March 2002. In November 2002 while off Sri Lanka some containers loaded with fireworks exploded with spectacular 4th of July-style results, the accommodation, bridge and engine room areas bearing the brunt of the blast. One crew member died�along with�one missing and others injured.
On inspection after a battle�to contain the fire�the ship was declared beyond economical repair and sold to Chinese breakers but was purchased from the scrapyard by Zodiac Shipping being rebuilt at a Shanghai ship yard for $4M less than her original purchase price and put back into service as NORASIA BELLATRIX in February 2004 being renamed MSC BELLATRIX August 2013. She is managed by Eastern Pacific Shipping Singapore.
