The rusting hulk of the roro ship ATLANTIC TRADER 1is gradually being dismantled at Titan Marine Engineering's finger wharf. The "stunt double" for the cruise ship SEABOURN LEGEND in the Holywood film "Cruise Control - Speed 2" starring Sandra Bullock, ATLANTIC TRADER 1 arrived in St. Mary's Bay by chance in 2001 when, on her delivery voyage from Miami, USA to Wellington, she began taking water and was towed to Auckland for urgent repairs.
She was placed under a Maritime New Zealand detention certificate soon after arrival, and was stopped from going to sea again, such was the extent of her hull corrosion. That corrosion, according to a recent statement by Maritime New Zealand, is now so bad that the only option is to scrap the vessel.
