SeapixOnlineDisplaying 9268 of 11102 TED ASHBY built by staff and volunteers at the New Zealand Maritime Museum here in Auckland was launched in 1993.
She is a ketch-rigged deck scow, a replica of those scows so typical of the types of cargo vessel plying the shallow waters of northern New Zealand’s estuaries and rivers.
These vessels were flat-bottomed and centreboard, for obvious reasons, and cargo, most typically timber, sand and shingle, was carried on deck.
Scows were mostly ketch or schooner rigged and ranged in length from 45’-130’ in length.
At their peak, there was a fleet of around 130 of these vessels plying the waters of northern New Zealand. Keywords: tall ships, sailing ships, auckland, new zealand, ports of auckland, port of auckland, flat bottomed |
