SeapixOnlineDisplaying 1 of 1 SIERRA rounds the top mark of the 2009 Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta tug race and begins the long slog for home as TAHUA closes in. SIERRA (1917) was built as a harbour ferry and general workboat. She was also part of the Subritzky fleet in later years. She was steamed around the coast to Auckland in the 1950’s and used as a ferry for the workmen during the construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in the late 1950's. TAHUA, was built for the Whakatane Harbour Board by WG Lowe & Sons of Devonport, Auckland. Launched on 7 June 1937 at a cost of £1793, she was affectionately known during her operational years as PORTEE until she was sold in 1977 to the Bay of Plenty Harbour Board. Three years later she was sold again, being slipped and rebuilt for charter work. Relaunched in 1984 she was bought by Keith and Vivienne Ingram of Neptune Charters of Auckland and used for some years as a specialist dive and charter vessel. |
