SeapixOnlineDisplaying 8793 of 11102 New Zealand Shipping Company's passenger ship RANGITANE approaching Gatun Locks on the Panama Canal. She is homeward bound from Wellington, New Zealand and the locks will take her down to the Atlantic level. RANGITANE was built 1949, 21,867 tons gross, and carried about 420 passengers as well as a large quantity of refrigerated cargo. She was sold in 1968, after the passenger service had ended, becoming briefly JAN and then ORIENTAL ESMERALDA. Broken up in 1976.
