SeapixOnline- Tugs and towboats - 1 of 1 KAREWA (right) and SIERRA bear down on the top mark of the course during the 169th Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta tug race.
KAREWA was built in 1951 by Lidgards to tow barges on the Piako River (Thames). When finished there she went to Tauranga as a Towing /pilot launch for the Tauranga Harbour Board. She is powered by an old style 6 cylinder Fordson diesel (120 Hp).
SIERRA (1917) was built as a harbour ferry and general workboat. She was also part of the Subritzky fleet in later years. She was steamed around the coast to Auckland in the 1950’s and used as a ferry for the workmen during the construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in the late 1950's. |
