Exercise Maru (Maori word meaniing 'safeguard') is currently underway in the Hauraki Gulf off the east coast of Auckland, New Zealand.
Involving over 600 personell, the exercise, running from 12-16 September is set to test counter-proliferation capabilities of the participating nations to intercept and deal with a vessel concealing materials which could be used in the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction. It will also test the legal procedures which would follow such an interception.
Observers from the Asia/Pacific region have been invited to the exercise which will involve live vessel-boardings in the Hauraki Gulf, container inspections at Ports of Auckland and a desk-top scenario to be conducted during a conference session..
Led by NZ Customs, Maru is a New Zealand Government Proliferation Security Initiative Exercise.
The Naval vessels HMNZS Te Kaha, HMNZS Resolution, HMAS Maryborough and FNS La Glorieuse, will also conduct a buildup exercise in the Hauraki Gulf over the period 12-14 September 2008.
