SeapixOnline- Workboats - 1 of 1 PUKE (1872) built by E. Thomson at Aratapu on the Kaipara Harbour, north of Auckland, NZ. These little steam launches serviced smaller harbors around the New Zealand coastline towing logs and sailing scows down rivers to open water. PUKE is a great example of this type of craft. She is 26ft in length with a beam of only 6ft8in. Her engine is an A & G Price single cylinder, double acting type with a Fink reversing gear. Her power is about 14hp at 180RPM. She was kindly gifted to the Union Steamship Company and the New Zealand National Maritime Museum. She was used at the Brisbane World Expo in 1988 as a tourist craft. She is seen here participating in the 168th Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta. She was not officially part of the race fleet as she is too small to cope with the waters of the outer Waitemata Harbour during the race.
