SeapixOnline- Tankers - 1 of 1 MATUKU (2016/29735grt/50143dwt/IMO 9657806) - The most recent addition to New Zealand's coastal shipping fleet, the chemical and oil products tanker Matuku (29735grt/50143dwt) arrived at Auckland's Wynyard Wharf oil installation today (21 Sept) for her maiden call in the 'City of Sails'.
Managed by Silver Fern Shipping of Wellington, Matuku is currently chartered to Coastal Oil Logistics but is owned by Singapore-based Grindrod Shipping.
Matuku was launched at the SPP Sacheon shipyard in South Korea in December last year and delivered in March. With a capacity to carry 55million litres of oil and at 175m in length, she is 30% larger and 20% more fuel efficient than the ship she replaces, the Torea (ex-Nyathi) which was serving the NZ coast since 2007 but which is now located in the Singapore region.
Silver Fern's other tanker Kakariki will be replaced in 2017 and like Kakariki, Matuku has been named after another native bird species, the Australasian Bitterne.
