MAXIM GORKIY (1969/24220grt/IMO 6810627, ex-MAKSIM GORKIY, HANSEATIC, HAMBURG. Renamed MARCO POLO II) bathed in early morning sun, arrives in Auckland, NZ. As of 30 November 2008, MAXIM GORKIY will leave her 20- year Phoenix- Seereisen charter, Fuel prices have made her steam turbines expensive to run.
Speculation was rife that Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich was likely to convert her into a large private yacht and use her as an hotel at the 2014 Winter Olympics but as at August 2009, she appeared from online advertising to have a new lease of life, cruising as MARCO POLO II although later that same month news came through that she had been beached at Alang for scrapping.
She made headlines in 1989 when she famously hit an iceberg in the Greenland Sea north of Norway, ripping two large holes in her hull. 2001. Photo by SeapixOnline.com
